Hampton Creek Inc. is a food technology company which is focused on finding new ways to utilize plants in food products. The company was founded in 2011 by Joshua Tetricks and Josh Balk, both of whom came up with the concept after noticing the prevalent problems in the food industry. As Balk himself explained, “If there were a [cheaper] plant-based egg product that had the same taste and texture as normal eggs… that would meet a need consumers and food customers have that hasn’t been filled yet.” The company, therefore, came into being in 2011. Since it’s creation, the company has filed a patent for plant-based egg substitute(Beyond Eggs) as well as plant-based substitutes for Mayo and cookie dough. An egg substitute is also in development.
Today, the company is conducting extensive research to develop newer products and has been lauded for its use of technology to effect sweeping change. Hampton Creek Inc. was praised as a “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum in 2015.
